Hello!
Hey, it’s your past self. I wonder if you’re reading this 10 or 20 years later. Or maybe the future you doesn’t want to read this. But this is what I wanted to write now, about our past, present, and future selves. You’d want to read it too, right?
Where are you, my future self? What are you doing? How’s your job? Your family? Your life? Are you having fun? Any regrets? Right now, I wish I had Doraemon’s time machine. But since time machines don’t exist, I want you to write back after reading this letter, telling me all I want to know. So now, let’s remember your past self.
Remember? When we were six and first asked by a teacher what we wanted to be when we grew up, we cutely replied, “I want to be like you.” Remember? In the second year of middle school, when we saw our best friend being bullied and couldn’t do anything about it, we frustratingly decided to become a police officer. Remember? At eighteen, standing before our future path, we chose to study economics to earn money. But maybe economics wasn’t for us, so we quickly got fed up with it. Instead of attending classes, we worked part-time jobs and partied with friends on weekends. Thus, our university days quickly ended with a diploma and not-so-great grades. But we had no regrets. Thanks to the part-time jobs, we gained knowledge not just from theory but from practice. Before graduating, we joined a company and became the assistant to the manager. It was a small company, but that time became a precious experience. Yet, even with a high salary, doing the same thing 8 hours a day from 8 am to 5 pm soon became boring. We just weren’t cut out for office work. So, we decided to quit, study Japanese as our mother suggested, and started living alone abroad. Our 23 years flew by in a blink.
Since childhood, our dreams and purposes in life have changed many times. But we always lived happily and comfortably, with no regrets.
So, I want to tell you this: you, who are reading this letter, don’t have to pursue my current dreams. Do what you want to do, go where you want to go, and enjoy what you like. I hope you continue to live life as you please.
