Graduate Essay

To the Japanese People Who Have Been Kind to Me,

It has been about a year and a half since I came to Japan. Although a year and a half may not seem like a long time for an international student, I believe it has been the most meaningful period for me. It was not easy for me, who had always been taken care of by my family, to start living alone for the first time. Initially filled with anxiety, I struggled to remember my duties even after a week of working a newspaper delivery part-time job. I made many mistakes and was often scolded, which made me anxious about whether I could really manage in Japan. However, thanks to the wonderful people around me, I was able to enjoy various experiences in Japan positively. Through these experiences, I feel I have grown significantly. One experience that stands out to me was when I mistakenly boarded the wrong bus on the way to my TOEIC exam in Osaka. I was anxious about whether I would make it on time. When I explained the situation to the bus driver, he was incredibly kind. Upon reaching the terminal, he drove me to the parking lot and helped me get on the bus to the exam site. Moreover, he refused to accept any fare, encouraging me, “As an international student, you are working hard in Japan. Keep up the effort, even when it’s tough. Good luck with your exam.” I was deeply moved and felt a warm sense of gratitude.

Thanks to that driver, I was able to take the TOEIC exam successfully and got admitted to the English and International Business program, majoring in Trade, at a vocational school. This was my first significant achievement in Japan. Without his help, I might not have been able to get into the vocational school.

Why would a complete stranger extend such kindness? I believe it reflects the Japanese concept of “Ichigo Ichie.” “Ichigo” is a Buddhist term, meaning the span of a human life from birth to death. Ichigo Ichie implies that every meeting is once-in-a-lifetime, unique and unrepeatable. In other words, every encounter between people is a precious, one-time event. Although the meeting is brief, both the person who receives help in a time of need and the person who kindly offers help can feel happiness and a sense of fulfillment. I have faced many difficulties in Japan, but I have overcome these challenges, gained experience, and am steadily moving towards my future dreams. I am deeply grateful for the kindness of all the Japanese people.
