My Hometown
24 years ago, I was born in Kaifeng City, Jiangnan Province, which is my hometown. Kaifeng has been chosen as the capital by various kings throughout history, changing its name each time. For instance, it was once called Daliang and then Chenliu. Particularly interesting is that during the Northern Song Dynasty, it was called “Dongjing,” though I’m not sure if the pronunciation is the same. As one of China’s ancient cities, Kaifeng has many old customs, cultures, and heritages. If anyone is interested in ancient China, I definitely recommend visiting my hometown.
When thinking of Kaifeng, various delicious foods come to mind. The most famous among them is a dish made with donkey meat called “Lu Rou Huo Shao.”
Now, I live in Japan. Since donkey meat is hard to come by in Japan, I can hardly eat “Lu Rou Huo Shao,” which is very disappointing. Every time I think of “Lu Rou Huo Shao,” I remember the smell of my hometown, my best friends, and my homeland.
The development of China today is very rapid. I think my ancient hometown needs development too, but societal development is not always a good thing. I believe new ideas are important, but the loss of old buildings and traditional culture is very regrettable.
I think the most important thing is the planned renovation and development of temples, pagodas, and old city walls in my hometown. I feel nostalgic thinking about my hometown.
